The Time Traveler's Wife

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Reviewed by L. Bennett

Audrey Niffennegger has penned a love story filled with passion and friendship, but with a unique twist. The Time Traveler's Wife is the story of Clare, a beautiful and talented artist, and Henry, a librarian, and their life together. Well, sort of together, for Henry disappears at inopportune moments and stays missing for unpredictable amounts of time.

Henry suffers from a genetic disorder that causes him to time travel, mostly into his past but less frequently to his future, arriving buck naked in circumstances that are often humorous and sometimes quite strange and uncomfortable. Imagine the consternation of his coworkers when they find Henry in the library stairwell inside of a wire cage that has no doors, and then see him come down the stairs to talk with himself! Or on his wedding day, when feeling the need for air Henry leans out a window and sees himself, as a child, in the bushes below. Then there's the New Year's party when Henry and Clare seek a quiet moment to themselves. As the countdown reaches one minute and Clare reaches out to kiss her husband, her lips touch thin air.

Niffenegger has presented a classic science-fiction theme -- time travel -- and built a love story around it. The result is a smoothly written novel that is quite entertaining and thought provoking. I enjoyed it.
